Free People Goes to Venezia

Venice, Italy has streets of water and is also home to one of the biggest masquerades in the world. Every corner you turn there are welcoming stores filled with handmade masks of every color. The little city of Venice is full of romance and tranquility but mostly character. Having just come from a northern tour of Italy, Venice was one of my favorite weekend getaways. Yesterday, I walked into the Clarendon Free People store and their Venice May 2011 catalog caught my attention.  I saw the canals and the Italian men standing on their gondolas wearing navy and white stripes. That was perfect for the background of a Free People shoot. Take a look at some Venetian love by Free People.

Ciao bella!

Perfect in Peach

Between the bride's headband and the groom's tan fedora, you wouldn't have guessed that they were just married. The wedding party is lovely using a soft shade of peach, yellow flowers and jars of lemons as center pieces. The theme is "country spring" and you can tell from the looks on those cherry blossoms that it is indeed spring. A front porch reception takes the place of a stuffy and artificially lit hotel ballroom. The bride's dress and the bridesmaid's dresses are dainty with sheer and lacy flowers delicately sown into the fabric. Sitting table side sippin' on sweet tea while watching the happy couple walk hand-in-hand down an elegant path just reassures everybody that everything looks perfect in peach. They didn't have to overdue it in order to have a wedding that feels and looks like it should have been worth a million dollars.

Do it up in Denim

What a different wedding theme to have! First off, white poppies used at a wedding are something you don't quite see everyday. It's not the standard red rose or white lily you see at every wedding. The amazing decor is just flat out fun with a hint of sophistication. Incorporating the groom's denim suit with a plaid button-down and a polka-dotted bow-tie is a fashion plus! Two patterns at the same time is the maximum or else it just creates clutter and the person looks like they don't know how to dress themselves. Shown below is also the back of one of the bridesmaids dresses. The style is relaxed and a little tomboyish when taking in the whole decor of this not so white, white vail occasion. The site oncewed.com (link provided below) is used as a canvas to display a hodgepodge of wedding fashion ideas and decorating ideas that the average wedding planner would never think of right off the bat. A traditional white dress and black tux will have to step down to be apart of this site. The creativity found is not down their aisle!

Interview with Ben Cobb on 'Hobo-Chic'

By Chelsea Gaetani

HERNDON, Va -
  • What are you trying to accomplish with your look?  “Hobo-chic is looking almost dirty and unpresentable but in the cleanest way possible. You need one really good piece of clothing, like the quality of your shirt or a nice pair of vintage boots."
  • When did you come up with the hobo-chic look? "Summer of 2010, it was because I was tired of constantly trying to pull off that clean cut and presentable look. It just didn't work for me but I still wanted to be fashionable in a way so I decided to change over to grunge and then changed it over to hobo-chic."
  • Would you classify yourself as 'hipster'? "no"
  • What is the difference between hobo-chic and hipster? "I feel like hipsters try to find things that nobody else has and try to look different where people have to approach them and ask them questions, hobo-chic is wearing brands that are more mainstream and wearing them in a way where they turn heads.”
  • When coming to the music industry, would you say your look is pretty common? "I would say it's wrongly identified. When looking at someone dressed grudge you have to almost pick apart or dissect what they are wearing to get it. Hobo-chic is taking higher end things and making them almost appear that way but in a fashionable manner. It's not like I smell..."
  • How do you think it projects the image of your band? Or does it at all? "Yes, because as a band we take our music seriously but we don’t take ourselves seriously. I mean, somedays ill try a lot harder in making the look all come together but other days I won't. It's not really hard anymore, It's just who I am. What makes it really great and what I like about it is there are enough different pieces of clothing to make me acceptable in any social situation while still portraying hobo-chic."
  • What is your favorite accessory? "Vintage boots, to me vintage means like someone else wore them before, hand-me-downish."
  • What is your favorite designer brand for shoes? Clothing? "Mark Nason for shoes and  mainstream brands from H&M and Express."

TIW Fashion Tip:
What makes something vintage? Authentically, the wear and tear over a long period of time. Fashion designers learned how to speed up that process by using distressed leatherwear and fabrics to make something appear to look vintage.

The Beauty of Benefit
By Chelsea Gaetani

WASHINGTON D.C. – Miss Singery held their 2nd annual fashion show“Beauty is Skin Deep” at the French Embassy on March 4th starting at 8pm, benefitting the Skin Cancer Foundation. The night was staged perfectly for such an elegant event. Amongst the crowed, talented fashion designers trickled backstage to get ready to show off their new look for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, the guests waited anxiously with cocktail in hand.

As the show started, the first to speak was Megan McConville representing Miss Singery 2011. As McConville spoke her passion for this philanthropic cause shone through every word. “Diverse people from diverse backgrounds, coming together for a common cause,” is how she described the radiant night at hand. Some of the upcoming events she mentioned included a Special Olympics sponsored by Miss Singery and a self-defense class for Women Against Domestic Violence. As the show preceded the host and news anchor, Will Thomas, FOX5, informed us that 1 in every 5 women will be diagnosed with skin cancer. Thomas lulled the crowed with such a frightening fact then all eyes focused toward the runway when the music picked up its pace.

The first look to hit the spotlight was casual yet classy. The models literally glistened while passing the men and women sitting in the front row whispering their critiques to one another. Positive feedback was written across their faces as their expressions spoke for them.

Some of the attending designers included Maggie Norris Couture, Daniella Kallmeyer, Vincent Licari and Gemma Kahng. Every designer allowed for spunk to hit the runway along with a fabulous taste of authenticity. The stylist for the show was Alexa Winner and she did an amazing job projecting the edgy aura of the show as a whole.

Miss Singery continues to execute benefits for numerous organizations with meaningful causes while adding whimsicality and glamour. For national and international charitable events, Miss Singery is raising awareness in a fashionable manner.
